New Single-Chip 2.4GHz Radio Transceiver From Toshiba Integrates Receiver and Transmitter

Low-Cost Device Combines Essential Radio Communication Functions in a Small Package to Suit Wide Range of Low Data Rate, Short-Range Wireless Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced a new single-chip radio transceiver in a compact package that provides the radio receive and transmit functions for radio communications systems in the unlicensed 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) Instrumentation, Scientific and Medical (ISM) frequency band. Designated TB32301AFL, the low-cost, highly integrated monolithic device also incorporates a low-noise amplifier (LNA), frequency modulation (FM) detector, voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), power amplifier (PA) and received strength signal indicator (RSSI). It is targeted at a wide range of radio frequency (RF) communication applications, including remote control, office and building security and wireless home networks.

"The general purpose radio market is a good fit for Toshiba Corporation's core competency to supply devices in high-volume production quantities into a wide range of customer applications," said Farhad Mafie, vice president of the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "Our comprehensive customer support infrastructure includes application engineering and assures our customer base of a competitive, fast time-to-market solution with both silicon and a reference design."

Toshiba achieved the highly-integrated, single-chip solution by using bipolar complementary metal oxide semiconductor (BiCMOS) process technology and a low intermediate frequency (IF) architecture. It is housed in a very compact 36-pin QON package that together with the reduced external component count achieves board size reductions.

"The TB32301AFL radio transceiver is targeted at customers who want to add a low-cost radio link in the 2.4GHz band to their products," said Abdul Aslami, business development manager of the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. "We believe the device's optimal feature set, level of integration and ease of use will make it attractive to customers in a wide range of low data rate, short- range radio link applications such as garage door openers, gaming controls, wireless industrial control and remote utility meter reading."

Pricing and Availability

Engineering samples of TB32301AFL are available now and are priced at $1.99 per piece in 100,000-piece quantities. Mass production is slated to begin in June 2003.
